Job Description Job Description SUMMARY : The Coordinator RN is
responsible for coordinating the care of patients for a designated
service throughout the continuum of care. The RN serves as a
clinical resource in the Perinatal Department. Through skilled
triage and assessment, education, collaboration and coordination of
healthcare and community resources, the RN assists patients to
achieve optimum functional health status and quality of life. The
RN is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Perinatal
Services Unit. He/she manages human resources at the unit level
cost-effectively. The Coordinator RN promptly and thoroughly
investigates and resolves complaints from patients, visitors,
staff, and physicians, and advises management/administration
appropriately. The Coordinator RN demonstrates an ability to
respond and provide direction in changing workloads during crisis
and emergency situations. The Coordinator RN accepts responsibility
for helping employees understand difficult administrative
decisions. Supervises functions and activities within the Clinical
area and coordinates with the Department Director. The Coordinator
RN assists in interpreting and implementing policies, procedures,
standards, and regulations for personnel, patients, medical staff,
and the public. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS : 1. Accountable for the
patient care delivered in the perinatal department, coordinating
with Department Director. Directs all staff in the delivery of high
standards of care and patient outcomes. 2. Demonstrates expertise
in delivering quality patient care in the unit. a. Works closely
with the Department Director to assess the need for Quality
Improvement Indicators and studies. Involves the staff in the
development of these studies. Implement them and promote
compliance. b. Responsible for compiling the QR/PI data and
participating in the quarterly staff QI meetings to assist in
problem-solving throughout the hospital and the clinic. c. Utilizes
the nursing process when making clinical decisions. 3. Effectively
assists in the management of conflict and/or change. Supports
organizational changes. Proactively identifies and assists in
addressing concerns and problems within the unit. Reports any
concerns to the Department Director in the formulation of a plan to
resolve and in the implementation of such plan. 4. Maintains and
demonstrates professional skills through self-
development/continuing education. Attend two management classes per
year, or pertinent classes. 5. Completes working schedules
according to the needs of the unit and the staff’s expected skills
level. 6. Participates in the development and updating of standards
and the unit policies and procedures. 7. Actively contributes to
cost control by managing time, resources, and supplies effectively.
8. Assigns duties to professional nursing and ancillary personnel
based on staff qualification, available staff and patient needs. 9.
Maintains compliance with all regulations established by
regulatory, legislative and accrediting bodies. Functions within
limits of the State Practice Act, Hospital and Nursing Department
Policies and Procedures, Department of Public Health, Joint
Commission, DNV and all regulatory standards. 10. Creates an
atmosphere of motivation and praise and assists staff in reaching
its full potential. Works in collaboration with the Department
Director and Education Department to develop competency assessments
of staff. Promotes advancement and retention of employees. 11.
Assists in monitoring and evaluating the competency of staff in a
timely manner and during the annual skills fair. Assists with the
planning of department activities and staff meetings. (Attends at
least nine per year, preferably on a monthly basis.) 12. Assists in
the management of department Human Resources functions including
conflict resolution, adherence to policies and employment
regulations, staff development, teambuilding, employee morale,
staffing with the correct level of competent employees. 13. Assists
in the development of financial budget for areas of responsibility
and coordinates activities within the approved financial plan. Aids
in the explanation variances effectively and timely, monitors
expenses, including labor, with emphasis on cost containment and
reduction. 14. Demonstrates competency in Patient Safety and
Management Accountabilities. 15. Assists in ensuring that all
employees in areas of responsibility meet employment requirements
such as timely completion of annual requirements, i.e.
re-orientation, tuberculosis screening, licensures, certifications,
fit-test, etc. Completes provisional and annual performance
appraisals within established time limits. OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES :
1. Orients and instructs new personnel as to unit practices,
operations and, policies and procedures. 2. Inspect department
regularly to assure adequate quantities of supplies and proper
functioning of equipment. Orders necessary supplies or requests
Department Director to place such orders. 3. Communicates problems
identified involving personnel, medical staff, patients, families
and the general public to the appropriate management personnel. 4.
Directs and coordinates efforts during emergency situations in the
absence of the Department Director. 5. Recognizes, interprets and
records signs and symptoms in the patient that require
intervention, takes prompt/appropriate action and notifies the
physician. 6. Provides direct patient care including assessment,
planning, implementation and evaluation of patients and conveys
findings to physician. 7. Administers medication and is
knowledgeable of medication being administered including side
effects, indications for use, proper dose and calculation of
chemotherapy medication. Records administered medications. 8.
Competent in the parenteral administration of fluids and blood
products. 9. Prepares and maintains equipment. Knowledgeable of
proper use and safety precautions in using equipment. 10. Initiates
and participates in cardiopulmonary resuscitation. ACLS and BLS
certifications as required by department. Certifications in
specialties are encouraged. 11. Maintains a complete and legible
medical record. Charts accurately utilizing the nursing process.
12. Recognizes and gives attention to the learning and psychosocial
needs of the patient and the patient’s significant other. 13.
Assists the physician during examinations, treatments and
procedures involving patients. 14. Correctly notes and carries out
physician orders in a timely manner. 15. Participates in
recommendations for the annual department budget and capital
equipment 16. Other duties as assigned from time to time.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES : Responsible for employee supervision
of the assigned nursing unit on the assigned shift. KNOWLEDGE,
SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED/PREFERRED: 1. Current
licensure to practice Registered Nursing in the State of
California. 2. Current CPR certification. 3. One year charge nurse
experience within the specialty field or equivalent training or
years of experience. *Must successfully complete on-the-job
orientation prescribed for the area assigned. 4. Graduation from an
accredited school of nursing. 5. Bachelors Degree, MSN or a degree
in a relevant field preferred 6. Previous Management Experience
Preferred. 7. Demonstrated clinical competence and leadership
skills. 8. Demonstrated ability to present self in a positive and
professional manner. 9. Familiarity with the basic nursing
performance standards as outlined in the California Nurse Practice
Act. 10. Knowledge of nursing policy and the interdepartmental
functions of the other patient care service areas with the
facility. AGE OF POPULATION SERVED : Adult? Geriatric? All X No
Patient Care? LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS Current licensure to
practice Registered Nursing in the State of California required.
Current AHA BLS required upon hire. ACLS, NRP, and PALS
certification as required by Department. SCHEDULING AND
AVAILABILITY Scheduling is determined by patient care needs and
includes weekends, holidays, nights, on-call, etc… Working every
other weekend is a minimum requirement Shift and call assignments
are modified to reflect department needs. In staff emergencies will
be able to work on alternate shifts and/or rotating job schedules
or similar activities, at intervals for limited periods of time as
mandated by department needs. MENTAL REQUIREMENTS : Ability to
follow written and oral instructions, must have the ability and
desire to learn job functions outlined in the job description, must
work as part of a team in order to achieve a common goal and must
maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the
course of work.
